Morgan Butts joined University Arts and Collections as the unit’s first director of communications and marketing in 2022. Bringing together her academic and professional experience in the arts, her work in advocacy and relationship-building, and a passion for higher education, Morgan leads communications for the major administrative unit and the campus-wide arts strategy, Arts MSU.
Morgan has over a decade of experience in arts, education, and non-profit organizations. She previously led communications at the Toledo Museum of Art, the Michigan Environmental Council, and the MSU Broad Art Museum. She also brings communications experience from Impression 5 Science Center and Miller Auditorium at Western Michigan University to her current role. Throughout her career, she has developed lasting communications infrastructure, having worked on or led four organizational rebranding efforts and three website development projects, as well as created two comprehensive brand guides.
Contributing to her community and her field, Morgan currently serves as an appointed commissioner for the Lansing Arts and Culture Commission, and previously served as vice president and co-founder of the Michigan Emerging Museum Professionals Network, a state branch of the National organization.
Morgan holds a bachelor’s degree in art history from Western Michigan University and a master’s degree in art history with concentrations in pre-Columbian and Indigenous art and museum studies from the University of Colorado Boulder.
