FEATURED PANELISTS
Julia Solomonoff
Julia Solomonoff is an Argentine filmmaker and producer based in New York. She is proud to be the first Latinx to chair the NYU Tisch Graduate Film Program, where she also teaches Directing. She studied at Argentine National Film School, and has an MFA in Film Directing from Columbia University, where she was the recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship, a Milos Forman Grant and a DGA Best Latinx Student Filmmaker Award. Her feature films as writer/director include multi-award winning Hermanas, The Last Summer of la Boyita and Nobody’s Watching (on Pragda STREAM). Her film work is included in the permanent collections at The MoMA and The Shed. Solomonoff has been teaching film directing at the graduate level for a decade.
Dr. Carlos Soler Montes
Dr. Carlos Soler Montes is the Head of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies, and Senior Lecturer at the University of Edinburgh. As a researcher, he is particularly interested in the area of language variation from a pluricentric perspective and how this variation can be dealt with by native speakers, as well as learners of Spanish. Carlos is trained in language pedagogy and taught Spanish at various universities (Connecticut, New Mexico, Calgary), and at the Instituto Cervantes. His most recent book, La diversidad del español y su enseñanza, was published by Routledge in 2022.
Lisa Hooper
Lisa Hooper is Head of Media Services at Tulane University. In this role, she works to provide equitable opportunities for interdisciplinary discovery, innovative scholarship, and skill development through creative play with multimedia collections and media tools. This work includes providing access through purchasing and licensing a wide array of film content for pedagogical and research purposes across the disciplines.
Dr. Scott Boehm
Dr. Scott Boehm is an Assistant Professor of Spanish and Global Studies, and he is affiliated with the Film Studies Program at Michigan State University. He is also a documentary filmmaker with a special interest in the Latinx experience in the US and digital archiving. Currently, Scott is working on documentaries about contemporary Spanish politics and a bicultural perspective on gun violence in the US. He serves as the director of Madrid 2015, a digital film archive, and played a pivotal role in launching The Spanish Civil War Memory Project. Additionally, he is the Founder and Director of the MSU Latinx Film Festival and serves as the Associate Editor of Film Reviews for Chasqui, the only academic journal dedicated to Latin American literature and culture.
Marta Sánchez
Marta Sánchez has over 20 years of experience in the film industry. She studied film in Madrid and entertainment business in NYC. She has worked at Twentieth Century Fox, Women Make Movies, and curated film programs at prestigious art institutions such as The MoMA, The Cinémathèque Française, and BFI. In 2005, Marta founded Pragda, the leading educational film distributor specializing in movies from Latin America, Spain, and the Latinx community. In 2021, she became a partner at Filmz and produced Miúcha: The Voice of Bossa Nova, which premiered at the 2022 Telluride and Toronto Film Festivals.
