ABOUT

Celebrate Earth Month with an ecofriendly afternoon at the Michigan State University Recycling Center. Join us on Saturday, April 13, from noon to 4 p.m. for the Earth Bash, sponsored by the Office of Sustainability and hosted in partnership with the MSU Science Festival.

An array of hands-on opportunities, plus tours of the recycling center and vermicompost hoophouse, will provide attendees with an inside look at how MSU manages waste as a resource. This family-friendly event will engage people of all ages with activities including creative reuse crafts provided by Spartan Upcycle, tech teardown courtesy of electronics processing staff, and seed starting using soil mixed with MSU’s own Grow Green Vermicompost.

The Spartan Upcycle crafts include making and painting a garden stake from scrap wood and repurposing a piece of tree branch and lab glass to make a hanging wall vase or plant propagator.

Those interested in reducing waste at home will appreciate the home waste audit demonstration and domicology display, which focus on practical ways to move away from the traditional “make-take-waste” model and toward a circular approach that prioritizes reducing and reusing resources.

Freecycling select clothing and media will be available at the event, as well.

Throughout the afternoon, attendees will have the chance to connect with campus groups including the Office of Sustainability, Student Life & Engagement, EcoReps, MSUVote, MSU PIRGIM and Impact 89FM, MSU’s student radio station, which will be providing music throughout the afternoon and giving away free CDs. Plus, find out about ScrapFest, a repurpose-focused art festival in Lansing that takes place in July.

Entry to the Earth Bash and all activities are free of charge.
