ABOUT

Now in its 29th season, the Muelder Summer Carillon Concert Series brings the distinctive sound of Beaumont Tower’s bells to life from the heart of MSU’s beautiful campus. Curated by Jon Lehrer, University Carillonist of MSU, the series invites listeners to gather on the surrounding grounds for a summer evening of music. Concerts take place Wednesdays at 6:00 p.m. in July and the first week of August and are free and open to the public. Bring a chair or blanket, pack a picnic, and come enjoy this treasured summer tradition at MSU.

Guest Carillonist: David Hunsberger
David R. Hunsberger is Assistant Carillonneur at the University of California, Berkeley, where he has served since 1983. An experienced performer, he has presented carillon recitals throughout the United States and internationally in Europe, New Zealand, and Australia. Hunsberger has also played a long‑standing leadership role within the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America, serving for decades as legal counsel and treasurer. He holds degrees from Baldwin Wallace College, where he graduated cum laude, and Washington University in St. Louis.

Program
Hunsberger’s program offers a thoughtful blend of classical and modern repertoire, pairing well‑known works by composers such as Felix Mendelssohn and Samuel Barber with more recent compositions by John Courter and Henk Badings. The concert also features a distinctive set of Irish tunes, bringing traditional melodies into dialogue with the carillon’s resonant sound world. Together, these selections create a varied summer program that balances formal structure, expressive contrast, and cultural color.
