ABOUT

The MSU Museum houses more than one million objects and specimens, but only a fraction can ever be on display. The Digital Double invites you behind the scenes to discover how museums transform access to collections through the power of digital technology.

In this interactive exhibition, explore how “digital surrogates”—high-quality digital stand-ins for physical objects are created through scanning, photography, 3D modeling, and even sound recording. While they are not the originals, these digital versions open new doors: they let you zoom in on delicate details, examine fragile or distant specimens, and even imagine how missing pieces might complete a whole object, like reconstructing a dinosaur skeleton.

The Digital Double celebrates innovation, curiosity, and the expanding ways we can experience museum collections. Step inside and reimagine what a museum object can be both in your hands and on your screen.
